Otkhmezuri, Dotson Lead SUU Past Vikings

Southern Utah took down the Portland State Vikings on Monday night 77-53. The rematch from Thursday saw the same result of a Thunderbirds win in a more decisive manner.

SUU sent out their regular starting five consisting of Daylani Ballena, Cherita Daughtrey, Samantha Johnston, Darri Dotson, and Lizzy Williamson to start the contest with a Portland State possession. Dotson started the scoring for the T-Birds with a trip to the line and then finding the basket on a jumper. Johnston recorded a block leading to a trip to the line for Daughtrey after a foul on the fast break to tie the ball game up at four.

Action picked up after the first media timeout with a Portland State three pointer followed up with two Dotson jumpers and an Eaton layup put the Birds in the lead. A bad pass led to a turnover and a lay up for the Vikings to reclaim the lead in a back and forth first quarter.

Free throws from Mia 'Uhila gave Portland State a three point lead going into the second period.

An Eaton jump shot broke Portland State's six straight points to open the quarter before the Vikings found the bucket from three point range. Natalia Otkhmezuri added a three pointer to break Southern Utah's cold streak, followed up with another three from Johnston to cut the lead to five.

Otkhmezuri and Dotson added two more buckets to keep Portland State on their toes as the final minute of the half approached. The Vikings fouled Dotson with 2.2 seconds left as she sank both buckets to send the game halftime with the Thunderbirds down 28-31.

Daughtrey drained the first three of the second half to tie the game right off the back. Williamson posted a layup under the basket for the Thunderbird lead on their next possession. Ballena added her own bucket as momentum swung in SUU's favor for the first time all ballgame.

Johnston found herself all alone to sink a three stretching Southern Utah's lead to 46-34. Dotson scored from under the basket to record her 17th point of the contest as the clock ticked down to the final media timeout in the third period.

The fourth quarter was all SUU continued to pile on to their lead before the contest ended with the score 77-53. The Thunderbird's lead reached 30 on the back of 14 points in the final period from Otkhmezuri.

Otkhmezuri tied Dotson for a game high 19 points. Dotson added 11 rebounds to secure a double-double. Madelyn Eaton added 17 of her own coming off the bench.

SUU are back in action Thursday in Moscow, Idaho taking on the 3-5 Vandals. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST and will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats will be available on govandals.com.
