Southern Utah Wraps up Play at Candrea Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Southern Utah University softball team closed out tournament play at the inaugural Mike Candrea Classic, dropping their first game of the day to New Mexico, as well as their second and final game to Oregon State, both by a score of 8-0.

Southern Utah vs. New Mexico

Freshman pitcher, Keimon Winston, got the start on the mound for the Thunderbirds, allowing seven hits and seven runs over five innings.

Winston started off strong and kept New Mexico in check over the first four innings, allowing only four runs while striking out four different Lobos batters.

New Mexico put together back-to-back hits, with two outs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

At the plate, the T-Birds struggled throughout the game to get much going against Lobos ace, Emma Guindon, who managed to strikeout eleven SUU batters on the day. Freshman Jayne Sepulveda was the only Thunderbird to reach first base in the game, going 1-2 at the plate, with a single and a walk.

Southern Utah vs. Oregon State

Southern Utah finished off tournament play with a tough matchup against another Pac-12 foe, Oregon State.

Keimon Winston started on the mound again for the T-Birds in the afternoon game, throwing a complete game, while allowing eleven hits and eight runs.

The Beavers got their bats going early, hitting two home runs and amassing four runs in the first inning. After the initial frame, Winston buckled down, and the Beavers failed to score again until the final inning.

The Thunderbirds had two hits in the game, as Reilly Williams collected her fourth hit of the tournament, and Dream Weaver went 1-2 with a double.

Up Next

Southern Utah will be back in action next weekend traveling to San Diego to participate in the Cartier Classic. The Thunderbirds will play five games over the course of three days, kicking things off with a matchup against CSUN on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. MT.
