Flippin' Birds Break a Pair of School Records in Road Loss to BYU

PROVO, Utah - The Southern Utah University Gymnastics team finished with the best team score away from home in school history, but it wasn't enough, as they fell to BYU by a final score of 197.225 - 197.000.

The loss moves Southern Utah to 4-6 on the season and puts them at 2-3 in MRGC competition.

Bars (49.450)

The Thunderbirds set the tone early, starting the evening off with an incredible performance on the uneven bars, shattering the previous school record of 49.400.

Hannah Nipp set a personal best for the season, and tied her career high mark with a score of 9.925. Mayson Bentley set a new career best mark, posting an identical score of 9.925. Shylen Murakami came in just behind Nipp and Bentley with a score of 9.900, while Nikki Thomas and Karley McClain rounded out the masterful performance by pitching in scores of 9.850 each.

"They just warmed up calmly, and to see them put their warmups on the floor during the meet, it was just beautiful," said Head Coach Scotty Bauman when asked about the team's performance on bars.

Vault (49.050)

Rachel Smith led the way for the T-Birds on the vault, posting a score of 9.850. Stephanie Tervort followed closely behind Smith, setting a season best for the vault by obtaining a score of 9.825. Caitlin Kho and Morgan Alfaro also turned in scores of 9.825 each for the rotation.

Floor (49.325)

The Flippin' Birds reset the tone of the meet on the floor rotation, with Karley McClain and Hannah Nipp leading the way for SUU by each posting a score of 9.900. Aubri Schwartze followed right behind them, scoring a personal best for the season by earning a 9.875.

Beam (49.175)

Rachel Smith closed out one of her strongest performances of the season by posting a career best mark of 9.925 on the balance beam. Hailey Vultaggio also turned in the best performance of her career on the beam, earning a score of 9.900. The contest came down to the final rotation, and unfortunately, BYU put together a team score of 49.625 on the floor to gain the final edge over the T-Birds.

The Flippin' Birds are back in action next week, returning home for a dual meet against Boise State scheduled for Friday, February 25 at 7 p.m. MT.
