Thunderbirds Finish Day Two of Campbell/Cartier Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Southern Utah University softball team lost contests to CSUN and San Diego State on day two of the Campbell/Cartier Classic.

The Thunderbirds started the day by losing a tight rematch against CSUN, 3-2. In the nightcap, SUU endured an 11-0 defeat at the hands of the host school, San Diego State.

In the first contest, Keimon Winston started on the mound for the T-Birds. After allowing a two-run home run in the first inning, Winston found her groove, allowing only two hits and one run over the next three innings.

After loading the bases in the third inning and not producing any runs, the Thunderbird offense broke through in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Amyah Boostedt and Riley Shue put together back-to-back singles, and Sophia Masut followed by crushing a double to left-center, bringing home both runners to make the score 3-2.

In the top of the fifth, Grace Owen took over on the mound for Southern Utah. She pitched the final three innings, giving up no hits or runs and striking out three batters.

SUU went into the bottom of the seventh inning in need of a run to tie the game. Jayne Sepulveda started off the inning by smashing a double to left-center, but the next three Thunderbird batters were retired to secure the victory for CSUN.

Southern Utah finished the game with a total of seven hits, three more than the Matadors. Boostedt and Shue each went 2-3 at the plate, while Josey White had her second hit of the season to join Sepulveda and Masut in tallying one hit apiece for the game.

Keimon Winston once again got the nod to start on the mound in the evening game. After a scoreless first inning from both sides, San Diego State was able to put up five runs in the second inning, and six in the third to take an 11-0 lead, as both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Southern Utah struggled to get anything going offensively against one of the best pitching groups in the country. Makall Whetten had the lone hit for SUU, a double in the fifth inning.

The Thunderbirds are back in action tomorrow morning, finishing off play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic with a game against Army set to begin at 11:00 a.m. MT.
