LOGAN, Utah – The Southern Utah University gymnastics team put up a score of 195.550 Friday night which was good enough to earn a victory over Ball State but resulted in a loss to MRGC rival Utah State.
The Cardinals finished the tri-meet with a score of 194.350 while Utah State claimed victory on a 196.425.
Friday marked Southern Utah's first tri-meet of the season. The win over Ball State was SUU's first victory since defeating BYU on January 21. The loss to Utah State marked the second-consecutive defeat in MRGC competition.
Bars (48.850)
The Thunderbirds started the night on bars, and it was the tandem of Hannah Nipp and Shylen Murakami who led the way with identical scores of 9.800. Aubri Schwartze added a 9.775 and Mayson Bentley earned a score of 9.750.
Beam (48.950)
Southern Utah saw improvement on the balance beam, starting with Emma Wissman. Wissman tied her career high on beam by scoring a 9.850. She was followed closely by Schwartze who registered a 9.825. Both Hailey Vultaggio and Murakami narrowly missed the 9.8 mark, but still managed to earn matching 9.775s.
Floor (48.675)
Schwartze continued her big night with a mark of 9.825 on her floor routine. Nipp and Karley McClain matched Schwartze's score, and Kayla Horton and Vultaggio rounded out the rotation by earning scores of 9.600.
Vault (49.075)
The Flippin' Birds saved their best rotation of the night for last with a score of 49.075 on vault. Caitlin Kho put up SUU's best individual performance of the meet by recording a 9.900. Morgan Alfaro followed with a strong score of 9.850, and Celine Barney earned a 9.800.
After two weeks on the road, Southern Utah will return home for its next meet on Friday, February 11, when Utah State makes the return trip to Cedar City.
