Thunderbirds Fall to Dixie State, 3-1

ST GEORGE, Utah- The Thunderbirds dropped their first game of the Dixie State Tournament to the Trailblazers 3-1 to drop to 1-15 on the season.

Dixie State got on the board first after a Capri Franzen wild pitch forced Carly Eldredge across the plate early. Franzen retired the next three batters in order to get out of the first.

Makall Whetten recorded the Thunderbirds' first hit of the ballgame in the 2nd with a single to right but was retired soon after on an inning ending fielder's choice.

Dixie's Rachel Campbell responded in the bottom half of the inning with a home run to left field to extend the lead to 2-0.

After a quiet third, SUU started out the fourth with a Jayne Sepulveda single. Singles from Makenna Calderon and Whetten moved Sepulveda to third to set up the RBI sacrifice fly from Dream Weaver for the T-Birds' first run of the day.

The Trailblazers added on another run via Laura Lockard in the fourth. That final run would be all Dixie needed as Kate Dolinski took the ball in the seventh to record the save.

Franzen took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits and four strikeouts over three and two third innings.

The Thunderbirds are back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader with New Mexico starting at 12:30 p.m. and Maine at 3:00 p.m.
