ST GEORGE, Utah– The Southern Utah University Softball team suffered a tough 10-1 loss Wednesday to their southern Utah rivals Dixie State.
With the loss, the Thunderbirds fall to 3-18 overall, while the trailblazers improve to 9-14 on the year.
Dixie State came out of the gate strong and smacked three home runs in the first inning to give them an early 6-0 lead.
Southern Utah's first baseman Reilly Williams answered right back in the top of the second inning when she cracked a solo home run to cut the deficit to five runs, but DSU was too dominant in this matchup.
Trailblazer ace and former Thunderbird Tyler Denhart led the way for the Trailblazers in this one. Denhart pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while allowing just four Thunderbird hits.
DSU's bats continued to stay hot and piled on four more runs in the second and third innings on eight total hits to put the game out of reach.
SUU will have one more shot at the Trailblazers this year as they are set to host the series finale on April 19th.
The Thunderbirds will have to rebound quickly, as they will be back in action in a doubleheader against the BYU Cougars in Provo on Saturday, March 19th.
Game times are scheduled for 1 pm and 3 pm MT. Live streaming for these matchups will be available on BYUTV
