CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah University football team will begin preparations for the 2022 season Monday when it opens spring practices at Eccles Coliseum.
Monday's practice will kick off at 4 p.m. MT and is open to the public. A full schedule of all spring practices is below.
The start of spring ball comes with some added excitement as it will provide the first opportunity to see the Thunderbirds under new head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was announced as the program's fifth head coach in the Division I era in December of 2021. After signing their first recruiting class and working in the office for three months, Fitzgerald and his new coaching staff are ready to hit the field for the first time.
There is also added buzz around the program as Southern Utah is now preparing for its first season in the Western Athletic Conference. After 10 seasons in the Big Sky Conference, SUU will play its first WAC schedule in 2022, which includes a trip up I-15 to take on the University of Utah, as well as the first meeting with Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) since 2010.
SUU returns multiple key contributors from last season's squad, including leading receivers Ethan Bolingbroke and Brandon Schenks on offense, and sack leader Francis Bemiy on defense. Bolingbroke put together a breakout season in 2021 with 523 receiving yards and two touchdowns while Schenks recorded 516 yards and six scores. Bemiy led the T-Bird defense with four sacks for 28 yards on the season while also compiling 48 tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
