SUU Softball Drops Contest to BYU

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University softball team fell at home in their midweek matchup against the BYU Cougars by a final score of 12-0.

The Cougars, who boast the strongest lineup in the West Coast Conference, got their bats going early, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off of a three-run home run.

Jayne Sepulveda continued her current hot streak at the plate by lacing a leadoff single to the right side of the field in Southern Utah's first at-bat.

Reilly Williams hit a single of her own two batters later, but the T-Birds were unable to produce any runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

BYU hit another home run in the top of the second, taking a 5-0 lead entering the bottom half of the inning.

Makenna Calderon started off the bottom of the second by drilling a fastball back up the middle for a single, giving SUU back-to-back leadoff baserunners in their first two at-bats. Similar to the bottom of the first, the T-Birds failed to take advantage of the leadoff single, and the score remained 5-0 entering the third frame.

The Cougars were able to plate one more run in their third trip to the plate, increasing the lead to 6-0.

Sepulveda earned her second hit in as many at-bats in the bottom of the third but was once again left stranded on base.

BYU matched their run total for the game in the top of the fourth, plating six runs on six hits and extending their lead up to 12-0.

After back-to-back scoreless at-bats for the two squads, Gianna Carosone attempted to start a T-Bird rally in the bottom of the fifth by smashing a double off the center-field wall in the first at-bat of the half-inning. Unfortunately, three consecutive outs ended the inning and the game, as the Cougars picked up their 31st victory of the season, and BYU starting pitcher Carley Brown improved her record to 8-0 on the mound this year.

Southern Utah has a bye this weekend before returning to the diamond next Tuesday, May 3, where they will host in-state rival and future WAC opponent Dixie State at 3 PM MT in their final home contest of the season.
