Women's Gymnastics Regan Hunsaker- Assistant AD for Sports Information

McClain is Magic in Home Opening Win for Thunderbirds

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah Gymnastics team hosted the University of New Hampshire for its home opening meet of the '23 campaign. Graduate student Karley McClain won the All-Around competition scoring a 39.475 as the Flippin' Birds won in commanding fashion.  

The Thunderbirds opened the meet on vault and set the tone for the meet early turning in a 49.025 as a team. The T-Birds dominated each event of the night turning in higher scores than the Wildcats at every rotation. 


VAULT (49.025)

Junior Hailey Vultaggio led off the meet turning in a 9.800. McClain and senior Rachel Smith boosted the SUU score, adding matching 9.825 scores. Sophomore Ellie Cacciola also scored a 9.800 and freshman Kayla Pardue rounded off the team score with a 9.775.

BARS (49.025)

The next event for the T-Birds was the uneven bars. The top score for the night for Southern Utah came from McClain on the bars as she turned out an impressive 9.900. Sophomore Isabella Neff put up a score of 9.850 while freshman Trista Goodman added a 9.825. 

BEAM (49.125)

The Flippin' Birds notched their highest event total on the beam, aided by McClain's 9.850 and identical scores of 9.825 from senior Kaylee Kho and Smith and Cacciola. Junior Aubri Schwartze capped the scoring on the beam with a 9.800.

FLOOR (48.925)

Always a crowd favorite, the T-Birds finished the night with a rotation on the floor. McClain once again brought the star power, turning in a score of 9.900, her second of the evening. Vultaggio added the next-best score for the Thunderbirds with a 9.825 followed by sophomore Taylor Gull who scored a 9.750. 


NEXT UP

The Flippin' Birds have another big meet coming up this Friday as they head to the Maverik Center for the Best of Utah Meet. The four-team event will start at 7:00 p.m. MT and features all of the state's Gymnastics programs, including the #3 ranked University of Utah and #22 ranked BYU.
