CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The 2023-24 men's basketball season will begin on the road for SUU as they head to Cal State University-Bakersfield on Monday, Nov 6. The game will tip off at 8:00 p.m. MT and can be streamed on ESPN+.
The Roadrunners
CSUB is led by returning starter Marvin McGhee III who scored the second-most points on the team a season ago. McGhee made 55 threes and shot 40% from deep in 22-23. The Roadrunners will also look to rely on redshirt senior transfer Cameron Wilbon, from Sacramento State.
CSUB finished last season with a record of 11-22 and 6-14 in conference play. They averaged just over 60 points a game while giving up just under 65 points per game.
The Thunderbirds
SUU will begin the first season under new Head Coach Rob Jeter with essentially a brand new team. Sophomore Parsa Fallah is the only returner who played over 100 minutes a season ago. Fallah averaged 3.5 ppg and 2.5 rebounds per game in just under an average of eight minutes per game. He also tallied seven blocks for SUU.
Jeter will look to Braden Housley to lead the team from the point guard position with Fallah starting in the five position.
Prophet Johnson, a transfer from Bellevue, is another player to watch for, an athlete who has the ability to impact the game in a variety of ways for SUU.
Dominique Ford, a transfer from the University of Idaho will also see significant minutes for coach Jeter and the Thunderbirds. Ford played in 31 games for the Vandals last season and started in 16 contests. Ford has the highest 3P% on the team, shooting it at 39.5 percent on 81 attempts a season ago.
"Bakersfield is a quality program and will be a good test for our season opener. Coach Barnes is legendary. His teams are always aggressive offensively and disruptive defensively. This is a great opportunity for us to grow as a team and find out who we are going to be this season." Said head coach Rob Jeter.
