Smith and Uhrich Shine as Thunderbirds Fall to Utes

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Megan Smith and Ava Uhrich combined for 41 points as the Southern Utah University women's basketball team fell to the University of Utah 96-60 on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the America First Event Center. The Thunderbirds move to 3-6 on the season, while the Utes improve to 9-2 overall.

"I thought Ava and Megan played really well, I'm super proud of their performance. Defensively, we have to continue to get better. There are things that we need to take away from this game and continue to work on."

TOP T-BIRDS

  • Megan Smith led all scorers with 26 points in addition to compiling a team-high five rebounds and two steals.

  • Ava Uhrich was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 15 points on 63 percent shooting from the field.

  • Daylani Ballena and Shiho Isono each dished out four assists to lead the Thunderbirds.


GAME RECAP

First Half

Ava Uhrich came out hot to start the game, scoring six quick points to push SUU in front by four, 11-7, early in the first quarter. However, the Utes used a 19-2 run to take a 26-13 advantage at the end of the period.

Utah carried this momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Thunderbirds 24-10. Megan Smith scored all 10 points for Southern Utah in the quarter, as the Thunderbirds trailed 50-23 at the break.

Second Half

Smith stayed aggressive to begin the second half, pouring in eight points to power the Thunderbirds' offense in the third period. The Utes held a 71-39 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Thunderbirds relied on a balanced attack in the final frame. Six players recorded a field goal in the fourth quarter for SUU as the Utes went on to claim a 96-60 victory.

Southern Utah will host Northern Arizona on Thursday, Dec. 21. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. MT.
