Southern Utah Set to Host Northern Arizona in Midday Contest

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's basketball team is set to host former Big Sky foe Northern Arizona at the America First Event Center on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. MT.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to play again. NAU is a tough team. I think this will be a good test for us. We need to continue to work on the little things that will make us a great team and we need more people to step up and contribute."


TOP T-BIRDS

  • Megan Smith has been dominant to start the season, leading the 'Birds in points (16.8), rebounds (6.4), and blocks (1.8) per game.

  • Daylani Ballena (15.0) and Ava Uhrich (12.0) each score in double-figures to add to the Thunderbirds' attack.

LAST TIME OUT

Southern Utah vs. Utah

First Half

Ava Uhrich came out hot to start the game, scoring six quick points to push SUU in front by four, 11-7, early in the first quarter. However, the Utes used a 19-2 run to take a 26-13 advantage at the end of the period.

Utah carried this momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Thunderbirds 24-10. Megan Smith scored all 10 points for Southern Utah in the quarter, as the Thunderbirds trailed 50-23 at the break.

Second Half

Smith stayed aggressive to begin the second half, pouring in eight points to power the Thunderbirds' offense in the third period. The Utes held a 71-39 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Thunderbirds relied on a balanced attack in the final frame. Six players recorded a field goal in the fourth quarter for SUU as the Utes went on to claim a 96-60 victory.

  • NAU owns a 7-3 record this season and is currently on a three-game winning streak.

  • The Lumberjacks score 75.4 points per game, while they hold their opponents to only 69.7 points each contest.

  • Sophie Glancey averages 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to lead Northern Arizona.

The Lumberjacks own a 12-9 all-time record against the Thunderbirds.
