CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah Softball team dropped a pair of games today against the University of Texas at Arlington 10-3 and 15-10. Though the Thunderbirds created some back-and-fourth moments, the Mavericks could walk away with the wins today. Due to weather and field conditions, the series which was scheduled to be played in Cedar City was moved to St. George.
Today marked the first time for the Thunderbirds to compete as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The games are just the first in the WAC regular season for the Thunderbirds, who will also host Stephen F. Austin, California Baptist, and rival Utah Tech this season.
The T-Birds were led at the plate Friday afternoon by freshman third baseman Emily Gonzalez who collected five hits between the two games including a home run over the left field wall in game two of the doubleheader. Junior outfielder Allie Laub also was quite productive at the plate, racking up four hits and driving in a run. Sophomore second baseman Jayne Sepulveda added three hits of her own and collected three RBIs. In all nearly every Thunderbird who played today picked up a hit between the two games
In the circle, freshman Riley Nielson started the first game, going just over three innings in the effort but picking up the loss. In Game two it was junior Shelby Basso who got the nod and competed hard but ultimately got the loss for the Thunderbirds.
