CEDAR CITY, Utah - As the Southern Utah University softball team gears up for the upcoming season, the infield has emerged as a powerhouse of talent and versatility. The Thunderbird coaching staff added a lot of promising talent in the offseason, creating a battle for starting spots. With a mix of experienced players and dynamic hitters, the team promises an electrifying and competitive journey on the diamond this season.
Coach Don Don Williams Said
"We have added some depth in our infield that has improved our program from previous years. They are a very cohesive, motivated group that is going to produce outs for our team."
First Base (1B): A Dynamic Duo in the Making
At first base, the Thunderbirds could use multiple players who are all ready to make an impact. Last year's offensive spark for the team, Emily Gonzalez has flipped from third to first in an attempt to make way for more offensive firepower. Freshman Arianna Ramirez has the ability to score runs with one swing of the bat and may also get some innings, especially early in the year, while the lineup is still being solidified. Keep an eye on sophomore Riley Nielson, an athletic pitcher, who may step in at 1B when the lineup allows, showcasing the team's newfound depth.
Second Base (2B): Lopez Leading the Charge
Miranda Lopez takes the helm at second base, bringing not only exceptional softball IQ but also a smooth glove and impeccable footwork. As a fifth-year veteran, Lopez assumes the role of the infield leader, providing a stabilizing defensive force for the team. Freshman Belle Freund also has quick feet and a solid glove. She could see some playing time while learning from the experience of Lopez. Freund could also vie for a spot in the outfield with her sheer athletic ability, it will all come down to her proving that she can hit with consistency.Â
Shortstop (SS): A Battle for Supremacy
The shortstop position unfolds as a battleground, with junior Ariyana Miranda and junior Laurie Cooke fiercely competing for the starting role. Miranda, a savvy player with previous experience at Eastern Kentucky University, displays a strong arm and a solid glove. Cooke brings exceptional foot speed and a reliable glove with excellent range, making this pre-season competition one to watch. The starting shortstop is yet to be decided, but both contenders come armed with the skills to leave a lasting impact.
Third Base (3B): Becerra's Defensive Dominance
At the hot corner, Karmyna Becerra stands out as one of the best defensively in the Western Athletic Conference. The transfer from California Baptist is known for her quick feet, superior glove work, and high softball IQ. Becerra is set to be the team's starting third baseman to begin the season. Her defensive ability not only secures the hot corner but also elevates the entire team. Watch for Becerra to make critical plays and set the defensive tone throughout the season.

A Season of Promise and Potential
With a lineup featuring veterans, dynamic hitters, and intense positional battles, the Southern Utah softball team's infield promises a season filled with excitement, competition, and the pursuit of excellence. As the pre-season unfolds, fans can expect thrilling matchups and pivotal moments that will shape the team's journey to success.
