SUU to travel to Fresno State before Saturday’s home opener against the Vandals

CEDAR CITY, Utah - After two losses on the road to start the 2024-2025 season, Southern Utah looks to bounce back this week. The Thunderbirds face another challenging road game against Fresno State in California on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Cedar City for their first official home game of the season against the University of Idaho at 2:00 p.m.

"We're looking forward to playing again and definitely excited to be back in the AFEC on Saturday for our home opener. We have to keep working to get better every day in practice and compete better every game."

Matchup History

  • The Thunderbirds hold a 1-1 all-time road record against the Bulldogs, with Fresno State taking their last matchup 76-66 in 2001.

  • Southern Utah will face Idaho for the first time since leaving the Big Sky Conference, currently holding a 5-20 record against the Vandals.


The Thunderbirds

In their two tough road contests to begin the season, SUU has averaged 29 rebounds and 55 points per game. Southern Utah is currently shooting 81% from the free-throw line.

Daylani Ballena leads the Thunderbirds in both scoring and assists with 12 PPG and seven total assists. The team's underclassmen have also looked strong, with freshman Sierra Chambers putting together 9.5 PPG and sophomore Ava Uhrich averaging 9 PPG and totaling 13 rebounds.


Scouting Report

Fresno State Bulldogs

With a 2-1 record on the season, the Bulldogs enter the SUU matchup with momentum after defeating UC Riverside at home on Monday, 63-53.

Fresno State's Mia Jacobs has proven herself to be a dominant force on both sides of the ball, averaging 21.3 PPG while shooting 45.7% from the field and 90% from the charity stripe. She also leads the team in rebounds with 35 and steals with ten.  

University of Idaho Vandals

The Vandals currently hold a 0-2 record, coming off a 71-60 road loss to the Washington State Cougars.

University of Idaho has two scorers over 10 PPG, with Rosie Schweizer averaging 16.5 and Hope Hassmann averaging 15. Leading at the boards, Jennifer Aadland has tallied 29 rebounds across the two contests.
