Women’s Basketball Pour In 86 in First Win of the Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's basketball team secured their first win of the season, winning their home showdown against Bethesda University of California 86-45 on Friday, Nov. 22. SUU now stands at a 1-5 record on the season, while Bethesda has yet to win in their 2024-2025 season.


Top T-Birds

  • Sydney Gandy scored a season-high 15 points on five three-point baskets, chipping in six assists and three steals.

  • Shooting 63.6% from the field, Ava Uhrich scored a season-high 14 points.

  • Freshman Denver Anderson put up ten points and brought down five boards.

  • 11 different Thunderbirds scored 5+ points on the night.

Game Recap

First Half

Southern Utah started with a heavy dose of Uhrich, who scored eight points in an 11-3 run from the whistle. Gandy finished out the quarter strong with two three-pointers and Lexi Bull added five points of her own to put SUU up 24-10.

The trio continued their scoring roll into the second quarter, supported by a helping of assists from Samantha Johnston. Holding Bethesda to only nine, the Thunderbirds went into the locker room up 46-19.

Second Half

Up on the scoreboard, Coach Mason took the opportunity in the second half to give valuable minutes to some of the team's younger players. In the third, Ashley Banks led the group, contributing a steal and a pair of offensive rebounds to a concerted effort in the paint.

Southern Utah spread the ball around to close out the fourth, with Daylani Ballena scoring her first points of the game and Anderson working her way up to the first double-digit scoring night of her college career.

The Thunderbirds will travel to Reno, Nev. next weekend to play in the Nugget Classic, starting with the University of Portland on Nov. 29 at 4:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
