Thunderbirds To Play Trio of Games in Reno’s Nugget Classic

CEDAR CITY, Utah - After picking up their first win at home, the Southern Utah University women's basketball team will travel to play three neutral site games in Reno, Nev. for the Nugget Classic from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1. 

The tournament celebrates Native American Heritage Month, recognizing student-athletes and alumna who represent the Great Basin Tribes of Nevada.


Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"We are looking forward to the Nugget Classic at the University of Nevada, Reno. We'll see some great competition with all three matchups. Playing three games in three days will be tough but also a good test for us."

The Thunderbirds

SUU rides scoring momentum from its first win of the season into the Nugget Classic, having scored a season-high 86 points against the University of Bethesda, California at home. The Thunderbirds also racked up 22 offensive boards and 25 assists in the showdown.

Heading up Southern Utah's scoring attack, Sydney Gandy and Ava Uhrich average 9.7 points per game. Lexi Bull serves as a defensive anchor off the bench, leading the team in rebounds and steals.


Scouting Report

University of Portland Pilots

The 5-0 Pilots enter the weekend averaging 84.2 PPG, shooting 48.5% from the field. Defensively, the team averages 14.2 steals and 5.6 blocks per game. The team will face SUU after its weakest defensive performance of the year on Nov. 23, allowing 66 points to California Baptist University in their 19-point victory.

Maisie Burnham leads the team in scoring with 16.2 PPG, complemented by 14.2 PPG from fellow guard Emme Shearer. Alexis Mark brings down the boards, averaging 6.8 rebounds per game, and leads the team in steals with ten on the season.

University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack

The 3-3 Wolf Pack faces Southern Utah in their second game of the weekend. Despite averaging a very strong 37.2 RPG, UNR averages only 65.8 PPG.

The Wolf Pack's strength lies in their talented forwards, with Kennedy Lee scoring 12 PPG and Lexie Givens bringing in a team-leading 5.8 RPG in addition to 10.2 PPG. Sophomore Dymonique Maxie leads the team in assists, steals, and blocks.

Central Michigan University Chippewas

The 0-4 Chippewas travel to Reno in search of their first season win, allowing 75.6 PPG to opposing teams and averaging 21.8 turnovers a game.

Jess Lawson has served as the driving force on both sides of the ball for CMU, putting up 11.3 PPG and eight RPG and leading the team in assists with 12.
