Southern Utah Drops Road Contest at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Southern Utah University women's basketball team fell to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Pete Mathews Coliseum, 77-58. The Thunderbirds drop to 0-2 on the season while the Gamecocks bounce back to a 1-1 record.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"I thought we played hard and competed in spurts. We have to put better stretches together as a group and extend runs. These road trips are hard but it doesn't get any easier. This is a taste of what conference is going to be like from a travel standpoint."

Top T-Birds

  • Daylani Ballena led the team's offense, racking up six assists and shooting 50% from the field for a team-high 16 points.
  • Ava Uhrich rounded up eight rebounds and contributed nine points for the second game in a row.
  • Jaeden Brown shot six-for-six from the free throw line, totaling eight points and four rebounds.

The Thunderbirds started out the game with two baskets from Uhrich, however, a 19-4 run led JSU to a 19-7 lead at the close of the first quarter.

Southern Utah came barreling back in the second, with two assists and seven points from Ballena cutting the Jacksonville State lead to only four with 3:55 left. Going into the half, the Thunderbirds trailed 34-25.

A balanced offense from the Thunderbirds brought scores from Ballena, Uhrich, and Gandy. JSU pushed the game out of reach for a Thunderbirds comeback, with a 22-15 Gamecock run putting an end to the 77-58 game.
