CEDAR CITY, Utah - Playing from down 21, the Southern Utah University women's basketball team couldn't pull off an impressive comeback attempt in which they cut the Cal Poly Mustangs' lead to six, losing 66-58 on Dec. 28 at home. SUU enters conference play next week at a 2-11 record, while Cal Poly evens out at 6-6.

Continuing a strong stretch of games, Ava Uhrich scored 17 points on 66.7% shooting.

Kortney Doman put together the best performance of her young career, racking up four steals and shooting 71.4% from the field for 13 points.

First Half
The Thunderbirds fell into an early first-quarter deficit, forcing Mason to call a timeout down 17-0. Southern Utah continued to struggle defensively but finally made their way onto the board with points from Uhrich and Daylani Ballena.
Heading into the second quarter down 27-8, SUU pushed their way back within range, holding Cal Poly to only nine points while Jaeden Brown found her rhythm to lead Southern Utah to a more manageable 36-22 game.
Second Half
Sydney Gandy opened the second half from three before Charli Kay and Kortney Doman sunk shots to keep the game within reach 51-36.
Doman and Uhrich caught fire in the fourth, each draining a three to contribute to the Thunderbirds' 22 fourth quarter points and cut the Mustang lead to six. However, intentional fouls sent Cal Poly to the line enough that they fended Southern Utah off 66-58.
