CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Flippin' Birds are set to take on BYU in back-to-back dual meets over the next few days. The first of the two matchups takes place on Friday, March 1, in Provo at the Marriot Center. The Thunderbirds will look to continue the improvement they have made this season by scoring high on the road. Following the Friday meet, the Cougars will follow the Flippin' Birds home to Cedar City for a showdown on Monday, March 4, in the America First Event Center.

The Competition
BYU
BYU, currently ranked 27th, faced off against #11 Denver on Friday, February 23rd, at the Marriott Center. Despite notching their second-highest score of the season at 196.500, the Cougars narrowly fell to the Pioneers, who scored 196.900. Anderson secured BYU's first perfect 10.000 from one judge this season on the beam, alongside a 9.900 from the second judge, marking a new career high of 9.950.
Throughout the season, BYU has continuously shown that they belong in their new conference, competing well in many different meets. The Cougars have gotten some outstanding routines from Alvarado and Anderson. Each of these two has achieved a 9.950 this season. The Cougars are well rounded as the #27 team in the country on vault, bars, and beam, while their floor team sits at #40.
Southern Utah Notes
- The Thunderbirds had a historic performance at Utah State in early February, scoring 196.800. (9th best in program history and 2nd best in conference history)
- Southern Utah is ranked #28 on the vault, #28 on bars, #39 on beam, and #53 on Floor.
- Freshman Niya Randolph scored a 9.925 on the floor last home meet, setting a new career high and team high for the season.
- Southern Utah scored an outstanding 49.125 on the vault and floor, also hitting a 49.175 on the bars at Boise State. The Thunderbirds are finding consistency and hitting their stride in the events.
- Freshman Niya Randolph has been named the Gymnast of the Week for the MPSF conference several times for her outstanding all-around consistency.
- The Flippin' Birds had 13 athletes from last year's team move on but have recruited a stellar freshman class.
- Southern Utah has three returning gymnasts who finished the season ranked in the top 100 nationally, including Kayla Pardue (#83 Vault), Aubri Schwartze (#96 Floor), and Ellie Cacciola (#51 Beam).
- Currently, the Thunderbirds have four gymnasts ranked in the top 100 nationally across various events.
- The Thunderbirds are coached by Scott Bauman, who was named the MRGC Coach of the Year in 2023. Associate Head Coach Jamie Wysong was also named the Assistant Coach of the Year for the conference.
