Southern Utah Swings Earn Doubleheader Split Against Abilene Christian

Arlington, Texas—The Southern Utah Softball team battled to a split against Abilene Christian on Friday. The Wildcats took game one 13-5, but the Thunderbirds bounced back in game two with an offensive onslaught, winning 14-3. 

The T-Birds were led at the plate by Junior Karmyna Becerra, who racked up four hits over the two games with three RBIs. Becerra smashed two home runs on the day. Freshman Kassidy Munoz also had an excellent day at the plate, hitting for the cycle over the two games. Munoz picked up five total RBIs in the outstanding effort. Freshman Arianna Ramirez also collected a pair of hits that both sailed over the fence for home runs. Sophomore Emily Gonzalez picked up four RBIs on three hits in the doubleheader. 

Freshman Emily Delgado started game one, pitching 4.2 innings in the loss. Game two was a combined effort. Junior Keimon Winston pitched the first three innings, earning the win. Winston held the Wildcats to 3 runs on five hits, striking out two batters. Sophomore Delaney Baker pitched two strong innings of relief, allowing just one hit.

Game 1 Summary

Abilene Christian took game one over Southern Utah, securing a comfortable lead early on with four runs. Shelander kicked off the offensive onslaught with an RBI single, followed by Miloch's hit, driving in another run. Abilene Christian continued to extend their lead, capitalizing on opportunities with key hits, including a triple by Bennett in the fourth inning. However, Southern Utah showed signs of resilience in the fourth and sixth innings, with home runs from Becerra and Ramirez, respectively, attempting to mount a comeback. Despite their efforts, Abilene Christian's offense remained potent, securing the victory with a final score of 13-5.

Game 2 Summary

In a high-scoring showdown, Southern Utah dominated Abilene Christian with a final score of 14-3. Southern Utah came out swinging in the first inning as Ramirez's homer and Miranda Lopez's RBI single quickly put them ahead 2-0. The offensive attack continued in the second inning with Emily Gonzalez's double and consecutive RBIs from Ariyana Miranda and Munoz, extending their lead to 5-0. Abilene Christian showed signs of life in the third inning with homers from Miloch and Kaiser, narrowing the gap to 5-3. However, Southern Utah's bats remained hot, exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by homers from Munoz and Becerra.

Southern Utah's explosive offense propelled them to a decisive victory over Abilene Christian. The game saw Southern Utah's hitters deliver a relentless barrage of hits and home runs, overwhelming their opponents from the outset to earn the 14-3 win.
