MARLBORO, New Jersey – Southern Utah University has earned the second-highest team grade-point average in the nation for the 2023-24 academic year, according to data submitted to the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). Every gymnast for the Flippin' Birds earned a WCGA Scholastic All-American award by maintaining a GPA above 3.5.
Head Coach Scotty Bauman Said
"I couldn't be prouder of our team for not only excelling on the gymnastics floor but also in the classroom. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and character. Earning one of the highest GPAs in the nation shows the commitment and discipline of our incredible student-athletes."
Under the leadership of Head Coach Scotty Bauman, the Thunderbirds achieved an impressive team GPA of 3.8584, a significant leap from their 19th-place ranking a year ago. This accomplishment reflects the dedication and commitment of the team's student-athletes, eight of whom earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The 2023-24 academic year also saw a record number of programs excelling in the classroom. Out of the 63 programs that averaged a 3.5 GPA or higher, Southern Utah stood out not only for its high academic standards but also for its consistent success in the classroom over the years.
WCGA Board Chair Casey Jo MacPherson Said
"With another year in the books, our student-athletes continue to raise the bar in the classroom in addition to on the competition floor, and I am always amazed at their ability to manage everything on their plate. Their impressive academic achievements are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and steadfast commitment to succeeding in all aspects of their lives."
Southern Utah's achievement is particularly notable in the context of national competition, with fellow MPSF member the University of Alaska leading the country with a GPA of 3.8678 and San Jose State University rounding out the top three with a GPA of 3.8295. The Thunderbirds' rise to the second spot underscores the strong culture of academic excellence within the program, as fostered by Coach Bauman and his staff.
