CEDAR CITY, Utah - The tight end position is a crucial element for the Southern Utah offense heading into the 2024 campaign. The tight end corps promises to be a dynamic and versatile unit with a strong group of returners who can catch passes and block with the big guys. Let's take a look at the players who could be key contributors this season.

Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald Said

"In my opinion, this is one of the deepest tight end groups in the conference. They all have the ability to make a difference blocking in the run game, and each could contribute in the passing game."

Joshua Acord

A redshirt sophomore from North Salt Lake City, Utah, Joshua Acord is poised for a breakout season after an impressive 2023 campaign. Last year, Acord appeared in all 11 games and emerged as a reliable target, hauling in 22 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown. Acord's high school pedigree is noteworthy—he set school records for touchdowns and receptions, earning All-State honors. His versatility and playmaking ability make him a key piece in the Thunderbirds' offensive plans, and he will likely be a primary target in the passing game.

Chase Merrell

Sophomore Chase Merrell, hailing from Afton, Wyoming, burst onto the scene in his first season with the Thunderbirds. Appearing in six games, Merrell recorded six catches for 47 yards and scored his first career touchdown against Austin Peay. His high school career at Star Valley was spectacular, with 50 catches for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior year. Merrell helped the Braves to a state title in his final season. Merrell's size and athleticism make him a promising red-zone threat and a player to watch as he continues to develop.

Jacob Moffitt

Transferring from Frostburg State before the 2022 season, Jacob Moffitt is a redshirt junior from Clear Spring, Maryland. In 2023, Moffitt appeared in six games for the T-Birds. Although his contributions have been less obvious, his high school career was decorated with multiple honors, including the Washington County Tight End of the Year Award in 2019. Moffitt's multi-sport background and experience add depth to the position group.

Francisco Calderon

A senior from Lawrence, Kansas, Francisco Calderon brings experience and a solid blocking presence to the Thunderbirds' lineup. In the 2023 season, Calderon appeared in six games, making five catches for 44 yards, with a long reception of 18 yards. While his receiving stats may not jump off the page, his value in the run game and pass protection is undeniable. Calderon has steadily contributed over the past two seasons, and as a senior, his leadership and physicality will be vital in helping the younger tight ends develop.

Nick Petrillo and Mason Thueson

Rounding out the group is Nick Petrillo, a redshirt freshman from Morristown, New Jersey. Though he did not participate in the 2023 season, Petrillo's high school accolades highlight his potential, including being a two-time All-Conference player. As he steps onto the field this season, Petrillo will aim to make his mark and contribute to the team's success in 2024. Mason Thueson, a freshman from Roy, Utah, showcased his athleticism as a multi-sport athlete in high school. He accumulated 538 career receiving yards on 38 catches, scored 5 touchdowns, and made 33 tackles, with 23 being solo. Thueson has been working hard to crack a spot in the rotation this fall.

Southern Utah's tight ends have experience, talent, and potential that could play a significant role in the team's offensive success. They are a versatile group capable of impacting both the passing and running games this year. With a balanced attack and strong contributions from the tight ends, the Thunderbirds are set to make noise in the upcoming season.
