Thunderbirds Defend Home Court in a Big Win Over The Knights

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Men's Basketball team was back in the AFEC Saturday night, taking on the Knights of Nobel University, and the T-Birds defended home court with a dominant 103-68 victory.

Top T-Birds

  • True freshman point guard Elijah Duval continued a quality freshman campaign, scoring 14 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field.
  • Isaiah Cottrell finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and four blocks in a dominant night.
  • Dylan Jones led the Thunderbirds in scoring with 15 points and three made three-pointers.

Game Recap

The Thunderbirds started the game slowly, only scoring 12 points by the under-12 media timeout, but the T-Birds quickly warmed up and went on a 25-5 run over the final eight minutes of the first half and headed into the break with a 38-24 lead.

SUU continued scoring the ball really well in the second half, with Dylan Jones making all three of his deep balls in the latter frame, and Jaiden Feroah and Tanner Hayhurst adding a triple in the second half as well.

Southern Utah was 62% from the field in the second half and 60% from three. The T-Birds also knocked down 17 of 19 free throws in the final 20 minutes.

A deep triple from Brayden Johnson off an offensive rebound gave the Thunderbirds the century mark, and then an and-one from Lorenzo Abellar put a close on the game at 103-68.


Statistical Recap

SUU was 50% from the floor on the game, 42% from deep, and 80.6% from the charity stripe. The Thunderbirds had 16 assists and just seven turnovers in the contest, while forcing a season-high 14 turnovers.

SUU scored 50 bench points, 44 points in the paint, and won the rebounding battle 38-28.

The Thunderbirds shot 36 free throws and made 29 of them, including 17-19 in the second half.

13 different Thunderbirds recorded a bucket on the night.

The Thunderbirds will be on the road for their next two, participating in the Urban-Bennett Invitational hosted by Robert Morris. The T-Birds will play Robert Morris on Friday, November 28, at 12:00 p.m. and then Stetson University on Saturday, November 29, at 12:00 p.m.
