Matchup History

  • The last time the Thunderbirds faced off against Washington State was nearly three decades ago. The 1997 road contest ended as a 109-79 loss for SUU.

The Thunderbirds

Earlier this week, Southern Utah started the season off on the right foot with a 103-55 win over the Park University Gilbert Buccaneers. In addition to debuting a potent scoring offense that shot 51.5% from the field and 50% from the three-point line, SUU racked up 51 rebounds and 10 steals.

Two Thunderbirds, junior Brooklyn Fely and sophomore Kortney Doman, logged double-doubles to open the season, and Fely and junior Morgan Trigueiro each totaled an outstanding 21 points. Trigueiro's totals came on 77.8% shooting from the field, and the transfer drained six triples from the perimeter in her first game with Southern Utah.

In addition, sophomores Sierra Chambers and Denver Anderson recorded quietly solid performances, each scoring on all four of their shots from the field.

Scouting Report

Washington State Cougars

With a rocky 0-2 start to the season, Washington State is performing better as a team than its record might suggest. In their 87-85 loss against the University of Idaho, they led for much of the game before the Vandals mounted a fourth-quarter comeback. On Wednesday against UNLV, the Cougars kept it tight before a stale third quarter put the Rebels out of reach.

The Cougars have proven accurate, shooting 44.3% from the field while holding their opponents to 38.4%. However, they send their foes to the free-throw line at a high rate and have averaged a shaky 20.5 turnovers per game.

Junior Eleonora Villa leads the Cougars in scoring, averaging an impressive 21.5 points per game on 52.9% shooting from the field. With a team-high six rebounds per game, sophomore Charlotte Abraham has played a strong complementary role with 10 PPG.
