Thunderbirds Struggle In Second-Half And Fall To ACU

ABILENE, TEXAS -- SUU Men's Basketball Team held a three-point lead at the end of the first half but couldn't hold on for the full 40 minutes and lost to Abilene Christian.

Head Coach Rob Jeter said

"We played a pretty good first half, honestly we could have had an even bigger lead and then we just came out flat in the second half. We didn't play with enough energy or discipline and it showed. We have a much needed break coming up, and hopefully we can get some guys healthy and end the season in the right way."

Top T-Birds

  • Jamir Simpson scored 15 points on 5-12 from the field to lead SUU in scoring.
  • Kai Burdick gave Head Coach Rob Jeter some positive minutes off the bench and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with four points.
  • Jeffrey (JT) Langston Jr scored 13 points and had six rebounds, including four offensive boards.

Game Recap

The Thunderbirds scrapped their way to a three-point lead at the end of the first half. They outrebounded the Wildcats 22-13 in the first half but had a hard time capitalizing on the extra opportunities, eight offensive rebounds only led to four second chance points.

As has been the case for most of the season, SUU struggled to take care of the ball, turning it over 14 times in the first half, which led to 13 points for the Wildcats. Despite that, eight points from Simpson and six points from Langston Jr gave the Thunderbirds a three-point lead after 20 minutes.

The lead didn't last long in the second half. ACU started the second half on an 8-2 run. At the 15:56 mark, Dominique Ford made a layup to make it 33-35 ACU, and then the Wildcats went on a 15-2 run over the next three minutes and change, and ACU held a 50-35 lead on the Thunderbirds and that is as close as it would get for the remainder of the game.
