TUSCALOOSA, Alabama— On Saturday, the Thunderbirds played a doubleheader with the #17 Virginia Tech Hokies. Southern Utah lost the first game 4-0 and, despite grabbing an early lead in game two, lost the second game 6-3.
Amyah Boostedt led at the plate for the Thunderbirds, going 3-6 with an RBI and one walk. Sophomore Kassidy Munoz also picked up multiple hits on the day, while Ariyana Miranda grabbed the other two RBIs for SUU. The Thunderbirds became the first mid-major to score against the Hokies this season. The only other teams to cross the plate against Virginia Tech this season are #7 LSU and #21 Alabama.
The T-Birds pitching staff continues to build against some very tough competition. Senior Keimon Winston pitched the entire first game, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out two. Delaney Baker started the second game, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and striking out one. In relief, Emily Delgado pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering two hits and striking out one.
Coach Don Don Williams Said
"I am so proud of how our team played today against a top 20 team. Our pitching staff continues to have solid performances in the circle, and our offense is making good adjustments. This team's resilience and competitive spirit is building every game."
Game One Summary vs. Virginia Tech
Southern Utah struggled to find its rhythm at the plate in a 4-0 loss to Virginia Tech.
The Hokies came out swinging, putting up three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double from Chatfield and an RBI single by McMillan.
SUU's offense had trouble gaining momentum, recording just three hits while leaving multiple runners stranded.
Chatfield added to Virginia Tech's lead with a solo homer in the fifth, while the Hokies' pitching kept the Thunderbirds in check.

Game Two Summary vs. Virginia Tech
The Thunderbirds came out strong against Virginia Tech in game two, striking early with a three-run first inning. A double from Ariyana Miranda brought in two runs, followed by an RBI double from Amyah Boostedt to give the Thunderbirds an early 3-0 lead.
The T-Birds maintained their advantage through the first three innings as their defense held the Hokies scoreless. Virginia Tech capitalized on SUU errors in the fourth, with Peck launching a three-run homer to tie the game at 3-3.
Despite loading the bases in the fourth and putting runners on in the fifth, SUU couldn't add to their lead. The Hokies, however, broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double from McMillan and an RBI single from Peck, pushing them ahead 6-3.
Despite their early momentum, the Thunderbirds fell 6-3 in a hard-fought battle.
