Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kale Nelson- Sports Information Intern

Uhrich Puts up 24 in Loss to Wildcats

ABILENE, Texas - An outstanding 24-point performance from Ava Uhrich couldn't boost the Southern Utah University Women's Basketball team to a win as they dropped their Feb. 8 road matchup against Abilene Christian University 74-52. The Thunderbirds sit at a 4-19 record overall, with a 2-8 Western Athletic conference record, while the Wildcats jump to 15-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"Ava played a strong game today and showed what she's capable of. Overall, I think we need to work on taking the right shots and playing with effort throughout the course of a full game."

Top T-Birds

  • Shooting 64% from the field and 57% from the perimeter, Uhirch put on a scoring clinic that included 24 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

  • Daylani Ballena led the team in rebounding with five boards, also contributing eight points to the Thunderbird attack.

  • Off the bench, Kortney Doman scored six points and scooped up two steals.

Game Recap

First Half

Uhrich kicked off the game from three for the Thunderbirds, but the Wildcats burst ahead on a 10-3 run. Scores from Ballena and Jaeden Brown cut into the deficit, but ACU extended to an 18-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Southern Utah started the second on a roll offensively, with Ballena and Uhrich chipping in scores to cut the lead to six. However, Abilene Christian recovered and pulled away, ahead 38-19 at halftime.

Second Half

Catching fire after the break, Uhrich scored nine points in the first three minutes of the third quarter, clawing back to a 14-point game. Despite the early success, SUU couldn't adjust to ACU's potent offense, which pushed them to a 58-35 lead.

The Wildcats continued pouring it on in the fourth, meaning eight more points from Uhrich and a triple from Sydney Gandy couldn't impact the outcome of the game as the Thunderbirds fell 74-52.
