ABILENE, Texas — The Thunderbirds wrapped up the series at Abilene Christian with a 2-1 loss on Saturday. Southern Utah fell to 2-4 in conference play with a 7-18 overall record.
Freshman Michaella Salvatierra was on fire at the plate today grabbing three hits including a double and scoring the lone run of the game for the T-Birds. Junior Alayah Toscano picked up two hits on the day as well. Sophomore Emily Delgado pitched another complete game in the loss, surrendering just one earned run on four hits and striking out two.
Coach Don Don Williams Said
"Emily pitched great this weekend and kept us in the game. Runners left on base have plagued our offense."
Game Summary
Game three of the series started much the same as the first two games with both teams struggling to break through. ACU struck first in the bottom of the third inning when a single and an error scored two runs.
The Thunderbirds continuously had runners on the bases racking up nine hits in the game but couldn't get the key hit needed to break through.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Thunderbirds picked up three singles in a row with two outs, but the Wildcats once again escaped without giving up a run.
In the top of the seventh inning, Michaella Salvatierra led off with a double and scored when Ariyana Miranda hit a ground ball to the second baseman. The run was too little, too late, as the Wildcats secured the 2-1 win, recording the final out just one pitch later.
