Thunderbirds Down Redhawks on the Road

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University Women's Basketball team closed out the regular season with a 66-51 road victory over Seattle University on March 6. The win pushed Southern Utah to an overall record of 9-20 with a 7-9 Western Athletic Conference record. The Redhawks fell to 3-25 overall with a 0-15 conference record.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"I thought we played tough tonight. We weathered their run and made our own to close it out. Dayla had a great final homecoming and I thought Jaeden made some big plays for us in the second half."

Game Recap

First Half

The Thunderbirds started the matchup on a 6-0 run led by two Lexi Bull buckets before Seattle U battled back to a tie. A Samantha Johnston triple boosted Southern Utah ahead once again, but by the end of the first quarter, SUU led by only one in a 13-12 showdown.

The Redhawks snatched the lead to open the second quarter, but Johnston and Sydney Gandy sank three-pointers to push back ahead. Johnston added her third three before Ballena and Ava Uhrich each chipped in a pair of free throws, putting them up 33-25 before halftime.

Second Half

Despite a strong performance from Seattle U's offense after the break, Ballena captained a Southern Utah scoring spree to extend to a comfortable 53-39 lead. The graduate guard logged 12 of SUU's 20 third-quarter points.

The Redhawks began the final quarter with an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to four, but Jaeden Brown scored 10 fourth-quarter points to lift the Thunderbirds back into the lead for a 66-51 win.
