CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Thunderbirds were firing on all cylinders on Friday afternoon, securing a road series victory by taking the first two games against Seattle University. The T-Birds took down the Redhawks 2-1 in game one and followed that up with a 4-3 victory in game two. Southern Utah moves to 8-9 in Western Athletic Conference play with a chance to climb to .500 on Saturday.
Senior Amyah Boostedt and sophomore Taralyn Ollison led the Thunderbirds with three hits apiece. Freshman Tawnie Mozeris picked up two RBIs on the day as the T-Birds used a whole team effort to earn the wins. In the circle, the Thunderbirds were able to rely on Emily Delgado and Keimon Winston, who each earned a victory, pitching complete games. Delgado allowed one run on five hits and struck out five batters. Winston surrendered three runs on nine hits and struck out four.
Coach Don Don Williams Said
"I'm incredibly proud of how our team showed up—two big wins against a quality opponent speaks volumes about their preparation, grit, and trust in one another. These weren't just wins, they were statements about who we are and where we are going."
Game One Summary
Seattle U struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1–0 lead after a leadoff double from Morris set the tone. A passed ball moved her to third, and a single from Fitch drove her in.
Southern Utah answered back quickly in the second. Arianna Ramirez reached on an error and advanced to second. Kassidy Munoz laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt, and Amyah Boostedt came through with a clutch RBI single up the middle to tie it 1–1.
From there, both teams found themselves locked in a defensive battle. Seattle U threatened multiple times, including loading the bases in the 6th inning, but SUU's defense and the pitching of Emily Delgado held firm. The turning point came in the top of the sixth when Laurie Cooke reached on an error, and Ramirez singled to move her to third. Pinch runner Tasha Hokanson stole second, and Munoz lifted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Cooke to score the go-ahead run.
Southern Utah's defense closed it out cleanly in the 7th, with three quick outs to seal the win.
Game Two Summary
Seattle came out swinging, launching a solo homer in the bottom of the first to take an early 1–0 lead. After a quick response by the Thunderbirds in the second, thanks to heads-up baserunning by Alayah Toscano and a defensive miscue by Seattle, the game was knotted up at 1–1. Seattle answered right back with a run in the bottom half to reclaim the lead at 2–1.
From there, pitching and defense settled in on both sides. SUU left runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but finally broke through in the sixth. Toscano once again sparked the rally, reaching on an error, and scoring the game-tying run on a perfectly placed infield single by Taralyn Ollison. Moments later, Cooke's bases-loaded walk brought in the go-ahead run to give SUU a 3–2 advantage.
The Thunderbirds added an insurance run in the seventh. With two outs and runners on, Tawnie Mozeris came through with a clutch RBI single to extend the lead to 4–2.
Seattle U threatened late, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh and putting the tying run on base, but Southern Utah's defense held firm with three straight flyouts to secure the win.
