CEDAR CITY, Utah - In the world of football, everything starts up front, and Southern Utah's offensive line is bringing the muscle, experience, and attitude to set the tone this fall. The expectation is high surrounding the offensive line, a unit that was pivotal in the team's success last year. The T-Birds return a core group of battle-tested veterans, anchored by Edward Riley, the undisputed leader in the trenches.
Coach DeLane Fitzgerald Said
"Our football program is excited about our offensive line this fall. After topping the conference in rushing last fall, we return the best center in the conference and have added pieces up front to continue building on our strength."
Riley Sets the Standard at Center
A two-time All-UAC honoree, Riley is the glue that holds this group together. His steady hand at center and relentless work ethic paved the way for Targhee Lambson's record-breaking season in 2024, and he's ready to do it again. Riley's leadership has turned the front five into one of the most cohesive units in the league, giving the T-Birds a steady foundation in both the run and pass game.
Veteran Core Brings Grit and Chemistry
Flanking Riley is a mix of familiar faces and rising stars. Jeremy Perkins saw action in 10 games last year, bringing grit and consistency to the front line, while Loimata Mauga enters his fourth season as a proven, physical presence. Sione Tai and Lookman Balogun add size and versatility, each with game experience and the ability to move defenders off the ball. After years of developing his craft, Davion Martinez, a former Nevada sack leader in high school, could be one of this year's breakout performers in the trenches. Also returning to take on a bigger role will be Krush Sowers. Sowers appeared in just one game for the T-Birds last season but has put in the work in the offseason.Â
New Faces, Big Potential
The depth chart gets an extra jolt from new arrivals. Sirri Kandiyeli, a transfer from Arizona State, comes in with a reputation for power and mobility, able to lock down multiple spots along the interior. Lee Sampson brings a wealth of experience to the roster, adding veteran savvy to the mix and raising the competition level across the line. Incoming freshman Ethan Wagner also has been turning heads this fall and could be competing for a spot at some point this season.
Paving the Way for More Records
With a proven anchor, a deep rotation, and fresh talent pushing for snaps, this group has all the makings of one of the UAC's toughest fronts. If the Thunderbirds' offense is going to soar in 2025, it will be because this line controls the line of scrimmage, and they look ready to do just that.
