Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Parker Haynie- Assistant Director of Communications

Feroah and Duval Shine in Loss to Utah Tech

ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- The Thunderbirds scored 91 points Saturday night in St. George but could not slow down the Trailblazers and ultimately fell to Utah Tech, 102-91.

Head Coach Rob Jeter said

"We just weren't good enough defensively. Anytime you score 91 points you should expect to win the game. We will watch the film back and make some adjustments so it doesn't happen again."

Top T-Birds

  • Jaiden Feroah had the best night of his career against the Trailblazers. Scoring 35 points on 13-16 from the field and pulling down 12 rebounds. It is his third straight double-double.
  • Elijah Duval had himself a career night as well. Duval poured in a career-high 28 points, dished out eight assists, corralled seven rebounds, blocked a shot, and had a steal.
  • Isaiah Cottrell scored eight points, had two rebounds and two steals, tacking on three blocks as well.

Game Recap

As soon as the ball was tipped, it looked like a high-scoring game. Both teams made their first two shot attempts. At the under-16 media timeout, the Trailblazers held a 10-9 lead.

Utah Tech was on fire from deep and led by as many as 12 in the first half. With 8:30 left to play, the Trailblazers had a 30-18 lead.

Over the next four minutes, SUU put together a quality 21-11 run that tied the ball game at 39-a-piece.

With 3:58 left to play in the first half, the game was tied, and then Utah Tech went on a 12-2 run. The half ended with a pair of free throws from Jaiden Feroah that saw SUU go into the break down 52-43.

The Thunderbirds beat Abilene Christian last week 74-52; the Trailblazers had 52 points in the first half.

Utah Tech scored the first four-points of the second half, and suddenly SUU was trailing by 13.

The lead grew as big as 15 for the Trailblazers, but the Thundebirds would not go away quietly.

A triple from Feroah trimmed the lead to 10 points with 8:19 remaining, which would spark a 9-0 run for the Thunderbirds, and with 6:28 left, the lead was just four for Utah Tech.

Unfortunately, that was as close as it would get for SUU.

Statistical Recap

SUU shot 53/35/80 on the night, but allowed the Trailblazers to go 54/43/75.

UTU had nine made triples compared to just five for the Thunderbirds.

SUU was outscored in bench points 23-4. Kai Burdick and Jalen (Roc) Lee were the only two non-starters for SUU to score a point.

The T-Birds only forced three turnovers in the game.

Up Next

That was the first of three-straight road games for SUU. They will be in Arlington, Texas, next Thursday, January 29, to take on the Mavericks of UT Arlington at 6:00 p.m.
