The Roadtrip Continues for Southern Utah With a Battle at California Baptist

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Men's Basketball team is searching for its first win of the 2025-26 Conference season and will have the opportunity at the WAC Preseason Favorite, California Baptist.

Head Coach Rob Jeter said

"It's not going to get any easier for us, so we have to start playing unselfish, disciplined basketball. The second game of a back-to-back is tough for both teams, so we need to come out with a lot of energy, and establish ourselves early."

Matchup History

  • The Thunderbirds and the Lancers have each collected four wins in a history dating back to 1998. Most recently, the Thunderbirds upset the Lancers with a 60-57 win in Riverside a season ago.

The Thunderbirds

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds were 25-60 (42%) from the field, but allowed UVU to go 36-66 (55%). The Thunderbirds were extremely impressive from deep, shooting their best percentage of the year at 11-23 (48%).

SUU had 14 turnovers and allowed only 12 points off them, compared to UVU's 15 turnovers, which led to 16 points for the Thunderbirds.

The biggest difference in the ball game was in the paint. The Wolverines corralled 45 rebounds compared to just 29 for SUU, and the Wolverines dominated scoring inside with 56 points in the paint while the T-Birds managed just 26.

The Thunderbirds shared the ball well on offense, with six players recording at least two assists and nine players with at least one for a total of 18, but the Wolverines had 25 on the night.

Four different Thunderbirds scored in double-digits.

SUU is now shooting 45% from the field on the year and 32% from deep. 14.6 assists per game is a great number, and they need to continue to share the basketball offensively to be successful.

Elijah Duval still leads the team in scoring at 12.9, and Jaiden Feroah is just one point behind him at 11.9. Dylan Jones is averaging nearly double-digits with 9.9 points per contest.

Feroah also just crept into the top-10 in SUU history for blocks in a single-season with 35 on the year.

The Lancers

CBU was picked to finish first in the preseason coaches poll, and was in a great spot after non-conference play, but then went 0-3 in the first three WAC games and shocked everybody. The Lancers finally picked up their first conference win last night at home against Utah Tech.

CBU averages 73 points per game and allows 71 to opponents. They shoot it at 44% from the field and 31% from deep.

The best thing about the Lancers is the preseason player of the year, Dominique Daniels Jr., who is averaging 21 points per game, 44/28/86 shooting splits. He has made 80 free throws on the year.

Former SUU player Martell Williams has been awesome for the Lancers this season. He is averaging 14 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds.

CBU is decent defensively, but would like to outscore you if they can. The Thunderbirds will need to be sound on defense, take care of the basketball on offense, and create quality possessions each time down the floor.
