Before SUU: 

• Transferred from Los Angeles Trade Tech CC, with personal bests in the 5,000-meters (14:30), 1,500-meters (3:52) and 800-meters (1:54)
• Placed third in the 1,500-meters at the South Coast Conference Championship
• Lettered once each in track and field and cross country.

Prep:

• Prepped at Santee Education Complex HS, racing in the 800-meters (1:57), mile (4:15.87) and two-mile (9:01.17)
• Placed first in cross country at the Southern California Championship and second in the state championship
• Two-time all-state performer in track and field and one-time all-state competitor in cross country
• Holds high school records in the 800-meters, mile and two-mile runs
• Lettered twice each in track and field and cross country, as well as once in soccer

Personal: 

• Parents are Natividad Pelaez and Donaciano Cortes
• Majoring in criminal justice
• The first in a family of 14 siblings to graduate high school and pursue a college degree
