Biography

A consensus 2010 pre-season all-American, he has also been listed on this year’s Payton Award Watch list. The Sports Network ranked Poots as the top returning receiver in the FCS ranks heading into 2010. Has 14 100-yard receiving games in his SUU career and has caught at least one touchdown pass in 20 of his 29 games at SUU, including 14 straight heading into the 2010 campaign.

At SUU, 2009: Earned Fabulous-50 recognition from the College Sporting News and second-team all-America honors from The Sports Network after finishing second in the nation in receptions per game (9.44), receiving yards per game (120.11) and scoring (10.0 points per game). Was named first-team all-Great West Conference for the second straight season. Missed the first two games with an injury but scored at least one touchdown in every game in which he played and broke the 100-yard receiving mark in seven. Caught 15 passes for 147 yards and three TDs vs. Eastern Washington and had 170 yards and a score on 12 grabs at Cal Poly. Finished the season with 85 catches for 1,081 yards and 15 touchdowns, setting single-season school records for receptions and touchdown receptions and leading the GWC in all three categories. Moved atop SUU’s career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns lists as well, with 197 receptions for 2,740 yards and 32 touchdowns.

At SUU, 2008: Earned first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-America honors last year after setting school records for receptions (83), receiving yards (1,236) and touchdown receptions (14). Ranked third in the nation in receptions per game (7.55) and receiving yards per game (112.36), was 24th in scoring at 7.64 ppg. Also set SUU records for receptions in a game with 16 at Cal Poly, where his 246 receiving yards were the third-best total in school history. Poots also caught four TD passes at UC Davis to tie the SUU record.

At SUU, 2007: Played in nine games, wound up third on team in receiving yards with 433 and receiving touchdowns with three, was fourth in receptions with 29. Had over 70 receiving yards in the last three games, including a 114-yard, two touchdown effort vs. Cal Poly.

At SUU, 2006: Spent the season as a redshirt.

Personal: Graduate of Coronado HS where he was a two-time all-state selection at wide receiver as well as a second-team selection at linebacker his senior season. Was named Las Vegas City MVP following the 2005 season and also was a two-time all-conference selection on both sides of the ball. Totalled 2,041 receiving yards, 270 tackles, 19 sacks, eight interceptions and broke up 17 passes during his high school football career. Helped the Cougars to a division championship in 2003. Also lettered in basketball, earning a McDonalds’ all-America nomination, a spot on the all-conference team twice and a second-team all-state honor his senior season. Parents are Lisa and Gregg Poots. Is majoring in business education.
