2008-09 Highs: 6 points vs. North Dakota St., 1 rebound six times; 1 assist vs. North Dakota St.

2008-09 Highlights: Played in 14 games with no starts. Averaged 1.2 points and 0.4 rebounds per game. Hit 3-of-9 3-point attempts. Had his best game as a Thunderbird vs. North Dakota St. when he scored an SUU-career-best six points, hitting two-of-three 3-point attempts, with a rebound, a steal and an assist.  

At New Mexico Military Institute: Averaged 17.5 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Colts to earn Western Junior College Athletic Conference first-team honorable mention honors in 2007-08. Also averaged over a steal and just under one assist per game and hit 47.3 percent of his shots, 31.6 percent of his 3-point attempts and 68.5 percent of his free throws. Averaged 12.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and over a steal per game as a freshman when he hit 49 percent of his shots from the field and 31.7 percent of his 3-point attempts in just over 10 minutes per game on the floor.  

At West Side High School: Averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and 1.6 steals per game as senior when he was named his team’s Most Valuable Player while earning first-team all-conference and all-Windex team honors. Helped the Roughriders to conference and region championships and played for the state championship after he scored 21 with 21 boards in the semi-final game.

Coach Reid on Byron: “Byrd has made tremendous strides since he walked into our gym last year. He’s worked very hard to get into shape to play in our system and the difference between where he was last year and where he is this year is amazing. He’s a guy who has athletic ability, but he’s kind of an in-betweener, he’s a small post player but not a perimeter player either. He can probably do his best work inside, where his quickness can cause big guys some problems, but he can shoot too.”
