Dionisio Gomez

Dionisio Gomez enters his fourth year as a member of the Southern Utah University Women’s Basketball staff. He spent his first three years as an assistant coach before being named associate head coach ahead of the 2017-18 season. As a member of the of the Thunderbird staff, Gomez oversees the development of the Lady T-Bird post players and is responsible for recruiting future Thunderbirds, both domestic and international.

Before coming to SUU and launching his coaching career, Gomez had an illustrious international playing career, playing professionally in Argentina, Spain, Japan, and the United States.

While in Japan, he played for the Shiga Lakestars of the Professional Basketball Japan League from 2012 to 2014. As a member of the Lakestars, he played for current Thunderbird head coach Chris Boettcher during the 2013-14 season. During his time in Argentina, he was a Central America and the Caribbean Champion in 2005 and a South American League Champion in 2009.

Before becoming a professional basketball player, Gomez played collegiate basketball for the University of Arkansas from 1998 to 2003. During his time there, the Razorbacks made three NCAA tournament appearances and were crowned SEC Tournament Champions at the end of the 1999-2000 season. He was named to the SEC All-Academic team three times in his career and was a team captain for the Razorbacks in his senior season.

Throughout both his collegiate and professional careers, Gomez was a member of the Panama National Team, competing for his home country from 1997 to 2007. As a member of Team Panama, he competed in two Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, two World Qualifying Tournaments, and the World Basketball Games in 2006. Gomez has recently rejoined the Panama National Team as a member of the staff, scouting opponents and leading the development of their guards and forwards.

Gomez graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2003 with a Bachelors of Arts in Spanish and is currently in the midst of earning a Bachelors in Business Administration with an emphasis in Information Systems.
