CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University Athletic Department and director of athletics Debbie Corum have announced the hiring of Michael Mucci as the new head coach of the Thunderbird women’s tennis program.

"We are very excited to welcome Michael to the Thunderbird family," Corum said. "He has great coaching experience and a drive to make this program as successful as it can possibly be. He will fit right in to the great group of coaches we have on this campus, and we're looking forward to seeing what he's able to do here at Southern Utah."

Mucci comes to Cedar City from Belmont University where he has served as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams since 2018. He helped lead Belmont’s women’s team to one of their best seasons in program history last season as they finished with 12 wins, the most since 2004.

Before coaching at Belmont, Mucci was an assistant for the men’s team at the University of Delaware for the 2017-18 season when the team finished with a 17-8 record, their best finish in 44 years. He also served as the head assistant tennis professional at the Tennis Club of Rochester and the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Niagara University.

“I am really excited to get going at SUU and continue to build the women’s tennis program here,” Mucci said. “We are going to create a top program in the Big Sky that prides itself on hard work and supporting each other. I want to thank Sonia Hahn and Debbie Corum for giving me the opportunity to lead the program at Southern Utah, and I’m ready to hit the ground running on day one.”

Mucci played his collegiate tennis at Niagara University from 2010-2013 where he was a two-time ITA scholar athlete. He graduated from Niagara with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and minors in Statistics and Gerontology in 2013.
