CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 28 - Southern Utah cross country will be in the hunt for its 19th and 20th conference title when the teams compete at The Summit League Cross Country Championships this weekend in Shreveport, La. Both teams swept the titles in 2007 and will be looking to repeat the feat for the first time since the 2003, 2004 seasons. In all, Southern Utah's men have captured ten conference titles with the women gathering eight.
“This could be one of the most competitive conference championships we have ever had,” head coach Eric Houle said of the meet. “Both the men and the women's side are very competitive with teams that are very evenly matched and include several very good athletes.”
Southern Utah will enter the competition with the top two individual times in the 8k after performances from Cameron Levins and Nate Jewkes during the season. Levins holds the top three times on an 8k course this season with Jewkes holding the fourth-best time, a 24:39 mark at the Notre Dame Invitational. Levins time of 24:22 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet is currently the best time in the conference.
Southern Utah's women will be riding a great deal of momentum after its top three runners each recorded top-five all-time performances at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet. Freshman Jamie Smith has been the top finisher for the Thunderbirds over the past four meets and is currently ranked in the top ten of the conference in the 6k. Freshman teammate Kirsten Sly is also ranked in the top ten in the conference.
The race will be hosted by Centenary College with the start time slated for 10 a.m. (MT).
