LOGAN, Utah (Nov. 29, 2010) - Southern
Utah University dropped a 63-56 decision at Utah State University Monday
evening.
The Thunderbirds (2-4) held a one-point lead
at the half before the Aggies (2-4) outscored SUU 29-21 in the second half,
scoring 26 points off of 21 Southern Utah turnovers. The Aggies also had a
decisive advantage at the free throw line, receiving 22 trips to the free throw
line, compared to SUU's eight as a number of Thunderbirds were forced to play
most of the second half in foul trouble.
Senior forward Challis Pascucci led SUU with
16 points while fellow senior guard Caitlyn Sears added 11 points and freshman
guard Desiree Jackson a finished with 10 points. Sophomore forward Tayler
Anderson grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while Pascucci and Sears each recorded
seven boards for SUU who finished with a 46-35 rebound advantage.
Southern Utah opened game with a 7-0 run as
senior guard Kaila Goff scoring the game's first five points and Pascucci later
added a bucket. A pair of Pascucci free throws at the 5:10 mark matched SUU's
largest lead of the half, 32-24 but the Aggies closed the half with a 10-3 run
to cut the Thunderbirds' lead to 35-34 at the half.
Jackson opened the second half with a long
three from the top of the key to ignite an 8-3 run to extend their lead 43-36.
Utah State would hit a couple free throws before Sears hit a three from the
left corner to give SUU an eight-point lead with just over five minutes into
the second half.
The Aggies again answered, going on a 7-0 run,
taking advantage of their 6'6" center Banna Diop and receiving a number of
trips to the line to cut the SUU lead to one before tying the game at 52-52
with 7:29 left on the clock. Both teams would trade baskets over the next
couple minutes before a pair of Aggie free throws gave them their first lead of
the game, 58-56 at the 2:33 mark.
The Thunderbirds struggled to get anything to
fall in the final minutes and were forced to foul as USU hit a couple free
throws to pull away.
Diop finished with game-highs of 19 points
and 11 rebounds for the Aggies. Goff finished with eight points and five
assists while sophomore guard Jadie Parsons came off the bench to score five
points, grab four rebounds and make two assists.
Southern Utah opens Summit League play
against Oakland University at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Rochester, Mich.
