CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University used a last-second defensive stop to
post a 62-61 victory over Oregon State University at the Centrum Arena Friday
evening.
Sophomore forward Tayler Anderson blocked
OSU's last second game-winning layup attempt to clinch Southern Utah's fourth straight win, SUU's
first four-game winning streak since the middle of the 2006-07 season. Four
Thunderbirds (6-5) scored in double-figures led by senior forward Challis
Pascucci who notched her second straight double-double and fourth of the season
with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Desiree Jackson added 13 points
while seniors Caitlyn Sears and Kaila Goff each finished with 10 points.
Freshman Carli Moreland finished with eight points while Anderson grabbed eight
boards and dished out three assists.
The Thunderbirds shot 41% and outrebounded
the Beavers (6-4) 47-28 including a 15-5 on the offensive glass.
Both teams traded baskets in the opening
minutes before Moreland came off the bench to spark a 6-0 run for the
Thunderbirds. Moreland entered the game and quickly grabbed two offensive
rebounds and put them back up for layups. Minutes later Sears made a steal and
went coast-to-coast for the layup. The next trip down saw freshman Angel Dorn make
nice line drive pass to Moreland underneath basket who finished with a layup.
Jackson then knocked down a baseline jumper to give SUU a 19-14 lead in the
opening minutes.
Both teams would continue trade baskets over
the next several minutes before SUU rattled off six straight points to build
28-21 lead at the 7:58 mark after a pair of free throws from Pascucci. The
Thunderbirds would keep their lead around seven before the Beavers used a
couple defensive stops in the final minutes to cut the SUU lead to 35-32 at the
half.
Pascucci and Jackson each finished the first
20 minutes with nine points.
OSU opened the second half with a long three
that tied the game but the Thunderbirds buckled down on defense and didn't
Oregon State to score for the next six minutes and used a 14-0 run to build a 49-35
lead. Goff got the run started with a three from straight-away, she later added
a coast-to-coast layin and Pascucci, Sears and Jackson each followed with
jumpers before the Beavers ended their scoreless streak at the 12:00 minute
mark.
Again the teams would trade baskets before a
pair of Pascucci free throws, a runner in the lane by Jackson and Sears jumper
from the right elbow opened up a 57-44 SUU advantage with 5:59 remaining.
Oregon State would get back in the game with a 14-3 run to erase SUU's
double-digit lead and make it a 60-58 ball game with just over two minutes
remaining.
It was a pair of youngsters in Anderson and
Jackson who made plays for the Thunderbirds down the stretch. Following OSU's
big run and an SUU timeout, Jackson attacked the basket and made a nice no-look
drop off pass to Pascucci for the layin and four-point 62-58 lead. On the
ensuing Oregon State possession, Anderson slid over and drew a charge to get
the ball back but with time winding down on the next Thunderbird possession,
the Beavers poked the ball away from Pascucci and came up with a steal. OSU
then called timeout and came back on the floor and hit a three to make it a
one-point 62-61 ball game.
Southern Utah then attempted to hold the ball
on the other end to run some clock off but Oregon State came away with a steal
on an entry pass to Pascucci and called timeout with 15.1 seconds left.
The Thunderbirds dialed up the defensive
pressure and forced Oregon State to work to get the ball inbounds. The Beavers
eventually got the ball inbounds behind midcourt and swung the ball around to
Sage Indendi who drove inside and got to the free throw line before dishing the
ball down low to an OSU player who had a wide-open look for the layin. The
Beavers seemed to be in position for the game-winner but Anderson slid over and
got just a piece of the shot, forcing the miss and giving SUU the one-point
victory.
Southern Utah continues its homestand with a
Monday afternoon matchup against Weber State University. Tip-off is scheduled
for Noon.
