CEDAR CITY, Utah - Senior forward Challis Pascucci became the eighth player in
school-history to score 1,000 career points as her game-high 26 points led
Southern Utah University to their fifth-straight victory with a 66-53 win over
Weber State University in the Centrum Arena Tuesday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds (7-5) out-rebounded the
Wildcats (4-6) 47-36 and posted an impressive defensive performance holding WSU
to 29% shooting, the season-low by a SUU opponent. Pascucci grabbed a game-high
12 rebounds to record her third consecutive double-double and fifth of the
season while also knocking down a career-best 14-of-15 free throws. Senior
guard Caitlyn Sears also recorded a double-double, her second of her career, scoring
19 points and matching a career-high with 11 rebounds.
"We played very well again tonight and
continue to get better each time out and that's what we are looking for from
this group," commented head coach JR Payne who's team matched last year's win
total of seven. "Challis has been dominant the past couple weeks and such a
good moment to reach 1,000 career point at home."
Southern Utah's season-long five-game winning
streak is the longest since the 2003-04 SUU team posted a six-game winning
streak in the middle of that season.
The Thunderbirds were off and running, using
a couple early runs in the early minutes to build a double-digit lead and never
look back. SUU answered the Wildcats opening basket with a 9-0 run as Pascucci
got things started with a rebound and put-back layup. Jackson followed with a
runner in the lane and after another Pascucci layin, senior point guard Kaila
Goff capped the run with a three in the right corner to give SUU an early 9-2
lead.
Following a pair of buckets by Weber State,
the Thunderbirds went right back down low to Pascucci who scored the next nine
points and Sears hit a long jumper to cap a 12-0 run and open up a 21-6 SUU
advantage.
Minutes later, Pascucci would reach the 1,000
career-point milestone after hitting both free throws at the 8:14 mark. She
would later add two more free throws and Sears followed with a rebound put-back
layup to give the Thunderbirds a 30-13 lead with 7:01 remaining.
Weber State would make a little bit of a run
to cut the SUU lead to 10 but the Thunderbirds would again answer with eight
straight points. Freshman Angel Dorn got things started with baseline drive and
nice up-and-under layup while Sears would add a jumper and Pascucci added four
more free throws to give Southern Utah a 39-25 lead at the half.
Pascucci led all players with 22 points and
nine rebounds while knocking down 12-of-13 free throw attempts. Sears finished
the half with 10 points and six rebounds. The SUU defense turned seven WSU
turnovers into 10 points and held the Wildcats to 24% shooting through the
first 20 minutes.
The Thunderbirds opened the second half by
getting the ball back to Pascucci who promptly hit a turnaround jumper. Both
teams would then go on to trade baskets much of the second half with Southern
Utah keeping its lead above 10 throughout. The Wildcats would cut the lead to
11 on a couple occasions but Goff answered with a three and Sears later
answered with a couple free throws and a driving layup to allow the
Thunderbirds to pull away in the final minutes.
Southern Utah held the Wildcats' leading
scorer and reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week Megan Patterson to
3-of-10 shooting and eight points. SUU also had sophomore forward Tayler Anderson
grab eight rebounds and Goff add eight points.
"All three seniors continue to be very
consistent for us and that is been a huge part of our success," Payne added. "This
team has done a great job of executing the game plan and the seniors have us
going in the right direction."
The Thunderbirds will have an eight-day break
before resuming Summit League play with a pair of home games against South
Dakota State on Dec. 29 and North Dakota State on Dec. 31. Both games are slated
for 7 p.m. tip-offs.
