TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Nov. 21 – Cameron Levins earned the
title of All-American with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA National Cross Country
Championship, earning Southern Utah's second top-five national finish in five
years. Nate Jewkes also represented the T-Birds with an 80th-place finish.
“The race went out really fast and I tried to stay with the
pack and get in a position to challenge Lalang,” Levins said. “I did the best I
could in preparation and in the race and I'm really happy with the result.”
Levins' 10k time of 29:04.8 broke the previous SUU record on
the course, set by Jess Baumgartner in 2006. Baumgartner's time of 30:52.3 earned
a third-place finish and All-American title. Levins also placed ahead of
Mountain Region top competitors Diego Estrada (7th) from NAU and Miles Batty
(14th) from BYU.
“It really speaks well of Cam's effort to be able to run
consistently on national and international stages like this,” said head coach
Eric Houle.
Jewkes also broke Baumgartner's record with an 80th-place
time of 30:39.0, finishing in the top 35 percent in the nation less than six
months after returning from a two-year break from training.
“Jewkes' performance gives us great hope that he will
be able to fill Cam's shoes,” Coach Houle said. “This season has given him a
lot of experience competing at a high level and I think he'll be contending for
an individual title in the future.”
Levins will now prepare for the Canadian XC Championship,
which will take place on Saturday in Vancouver, B.C. The rest of the
Thunderbirds will begin preparing for the indoor track & field season,
which will begin Jan. 14 at NAU.
