SUU Gymnastics Stays Undefeated with Victory at CS Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Feb. 11 - Southern Utah University gymnastics remained undefeated in Western Athletic Conference action with a 193.000 victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Friday night. The win was highlighted by four individual titles for the T-Birds, including first-place finishes on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around.

The Thunderbirds began the night on the uneven bars, scoring a 48.375 and sweeping first through sixth place. Alyssa Click rebounded from a fall last week on bars to secure the event title with a 9.800 and was followed closely by Lauren Jeffrey with a 9.750. Brooke Cersosimo (9.650) and Ari Lamb (9.625) were joined by matching scores of 9.550 by Caitlin Kennedy and Michaela Chernoch to round out the team score.

The Titans began the night on vault, scoring a team-best 48.075 during the event, but went on to struggle throughout the rest of the meet as the team finished with a 187.275. Shelly Cooper took home CSF's lone title of the night with a 9.800 on vault.

Cersosimo narrowly missed the vault title, scoring a 9.775 on the event to finish in a close second. Lindsey Schultz (9.725) and Shannon Coughlin (9.700) joined Cersosimo in the 9.700's as the Thunderbirds finished with a 48.425.

SUU then moved to the floor, its strongest event of the year, but struggled as the team scored a season-low 48.075 with a pair of neutral deductions on Ari Lamb and Cersosimo for stepping out of bounds. Schultz finished as the floor champion with a 9.750 with Lauren Jeffrey (9.700) and Alyssa Click (9.675) finishing in second and third.

Southern Utah finished the night on the balance team, taking first through fourth place on the event with Cersosimo leading the way with a 9.775. She was followed by Coughlin with a 9.725 and Chernoch and Lamb with matching 9.650's.

Cersosimo went on to capture the all-around title with a 38.650 with Lamb in second, scoring a 38.300.

SUU will be back home next weekend when the T-Birds host the San Jose State Spartans in a Western Athletic Conference meet. The competition is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Centrum Arena.
