CEDAR CITY, Utah - Mar. 22 - After a two-week break from competition, Southern Utah Track & Field prepares to split up for the weekend as they travel to two different California meets. Most of the team will compete at the Titan Twilight Open hosted by Cal State-Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif. Several members of the men's and women's distance teams will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
"We're starting to get into the big meets that will show us what everyone is capable of," said head coach Eric Houle. "These are opportunities to put the athletes in situations where they have to perform at their best and see all this training pay off."
The T-Birds will be led in Fullerton by sprinters Preston Myers and Chelsey Allen. Myers' 200-meter dash time of 22.18 at the Northridge Invitational currently ranks first in the Summit League, while Allen's 100-meter dash time of 12.15 ranks third in the conference.
Hurdlers Kylie Frandsen and Kodai Kusano will also compete for the T-Birds in Fullerton. Frandsen finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.80 at the Northridge Invitational, ranking first in the conference, while Kusano's 400-meter hurdle time of 53.84 ranks second.
Kayla Kovar, Adrienne Hill, Amber Madril and Hector Perez will return to throw for Southern Utah at Fullerton. Kovar threw the discus to a mark of 154-6 at Northridge, ranking first in the league. Hill followed close behind with a mark of 149-7 and a second place rank. Madril threw the javelin to a mark of 129-4 and also earned a second-place rank. Perez also broke into the rankings with a mark of 51-11 in the shot put. His mark also ranks first in the conference.
The Thunderbirds will be represented at Stanford by distance runners Steffi Minson and Kirsten Bradford. Minson earned a first-place rank after racing to time of 11:24.45 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Oxy Distance Carnival. Bradford finished the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:37.67, earning a second-place rank.
Devin Antzcak will lead the men after finishing the 1,500-meter run in 4:00.53 at Oxy, also earning a first-place rank in the conference.
The Thunderbirds will take another two-week break from competition as the they prepare for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Pomona, Calif. on Apr.9.
