Southern Utah Shines on National Stage at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif./AZUSA, Calif. - Apr. 16 - The Thunderbirds' Track & Field teams found great success in California this weekend as many school and personal records were set at the Mt. SAC  Relays and at Azusa-Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational.

"To have this many records broken in one weekend is really an indication of how well the training is working," said head coach Eric Houle. "It is not easy task to maintain athletic condition and peaking for nine months and the athletes are proving that we must be doing it right."

One of the most notable performances was that of Cameron Levins in the Olympic development 5,000-meter run at Mt. SAC. Levins remained near the head of the pack for the entire race and brought home a fifth-place finish with a time of 13:44.23. This time improves the previous school record (also set by Levins earlier in the season) by more than five seconds.

Kevin Sandall also represented the men's distance team at Mt. SAC and finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:04.98. Sandall's time also improves his previous third-place record in Southern Utah's top ten.

The throwers were led by Tyler Anderson, who threw the hammer to a mark of 182-11 at Mt. SAC. Anderson's mark placed 15th overall and improved his previous fifth-place Southern Utah record while

Brent Springall set a new fourth-place school record in the men's decathlon with a score of 6450.

The women were no less successful as the 4x100-meter relay team, including Shaye Maurer, Jasmine Paicely, Chelsey Allen and Christina Day, finished third overall. The team's time of 45.98 also set a new first-place record for the Thunderbirds. Maurer also matched her own third-place school record in the women's 100-meter hurdles with an eighth-place finish and time of 13.92 and set a new first-place record in the heptathlon with a score of 5111.

The women's distance team was led at Mt. SAC by Diana Medina, who finished the 5,000-meter run third in her heat with a time of 16.44.81. Medina' time ranks second in SUU's records. She was followed by Kirsten Bradford (17:03.98) and Jamie Smith (17:08.15), who also improved their own fifth- and sixth-place respective school records.

Medina also ran in the women's 1,500-meter run at Azusa-Pacific, racing to a first-place finish with a time of 4:30.41 and setting a new fourth-place Southern Utah record.

Kylie Murakami led the women in jumps this weekend as she set a new T-Bird record in the triple jump with a sixth-place mark of 17-3.25. Murakami also set an eighth-place record in the long jump after leaping to a 12th-place mark of 37-2.5.

The throwers were led by Kayla Kovar, who threw the hammer to an eighth-place mark of 167-2. Kovar's mark also ranks fifth in Southern Utah's top ten.

The men were led at Azusa-Pacific by jumper Alex Anderson, who set a new first-place school record with a third-place mark of 49-6.5 in the long jump.

Hector Perez threw the shot to a new personal best mark of 54-4.5, finishing in second-place and improving his own fourth-place school record while Donovan Lewis raced to a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.8.

The team will now take a two-week break from competition before traveling to Wichita, Kan. for the BCS Buster Invitational at Wichita State on Apr. 30.
