Southern Utah Wins Second Straight

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah used a late go-ahead goal to claim a 2-1 come from behind win over Northern Iowa for their second consecutive victory Friday. The Thunderbirds were able to knot the score at a goal apiece going into the break after an early Panther goal and the tally would remain 1-1 until the final minutes of the match when junior forward Shelby Ostler netted the game winner for SUU.

The Southern Utah offense continued it's aggressive style of attack as they doubled up their opponents in the shot column, 18-9. The Thunderbirds have outshot their opponents in each of their first three matches on the year and are currently averaging more than 16 shots per game while allowing just over nine.

Although the Thunderbirds were the aggressors on offense, the Panthers struck first scoring the opening goal just five minutes into the game. Northern Iowa junior midfielder Kelsey Dolder drove a corner kick into the box where Claire Clark was able to connect on the pass and take a shot that was blocked by Southern Utah goalkeeper Charly Booth. Booth was unable to control the ball and Clark was there for a header that found the back of the net for the first goal of the match.

Southern Utah would answer in the seventeenth minute when junior midfielder Missy Lazcano gathered the ball after it bounced on a long goal kick from Booth and drove a shot into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. The Thunderbirds had a chance to take the lead just a few minutes later when freshman defender Christine Meehan had a good look at the goal but the UNI keeper was able to make the save and keep the score level at 1-1.

The match remained tied until the final minutes of the game.  With just six minutes left to play SUU midfielder Riley Bassett made an excellent pass to Shelby Ostler who put a shot into the top right corner to give Southern Utah the lead. Ostler's first goal of the season would prove to be the game winner as the Thunderbirds held on for the 2-1 victory to improve their record on the year to 2-1.

Southern Utah will return to the pitch this Sunday at the Northern Arizona Tournament as the Thunderbirds face the Drake Bulldogs. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
