Southern Utah Suffers Second Defeat in Tulsa

TULSA, Oklahoma – The Southern Utah University soccer team wrapped up a six-game road trip with a 2-0 loss to the University of Tulsa Sunday afternoon. The Thunderbirds have now dropped four straight matches in a row while being held scoreless over the same stretch.

The game proved to be a defensive battle as neither team would get on the board until the final minutes of the match. The Thunderbird offense struggled to create scoring opportunities as they were able to produce just four shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Tulsa then upped the pressure in the second half taking 18 shots while holding SUU to just three. In the end the Golden Hurricane would outshoot the T-Birds by a tally of 26-7.

Southern Utah goalkeeper Breana Fitzgerald got her first start in the net this season after replacing Charly Booth during a match at Oral Roberts earlier in the week.  The redshirt sophomore turned in an impressive peformance collecting a total of nine saves and holding the Tulsa offense scoreless during the first 75 minutes of play. The Golden Hurricane was persistent however, and broke through with just 15 minutes remaining in regulation when Miranda Zoller played the ball to teammate Claire Nicholson who was open on the left side for a shot that found the back of the net to break the deadlock. Nicholson would then pick up an assist on the game's second goal when she fired a shot that was blocked by Fitzgerald back into the field of play where Camille Pelley was able to deposit the ball in the net for the insurance goal and set the final score at 2-0 in favor of the home team.

With the loss Southern Utah is now 2-5-1 this season, with a record of 0-1 in Summit League play. The Thunderbirds will return to Cedar City this week for their first home match in over a month. SUU will host future Big Sky opponent Montana in a match that is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. this Thursday.
